Willoughby Astley was born at St. Perranuthnee, Cornwall, England in 1859 and died at Nelson, B.C. in 1948. In 1894 he married Ida Penn, who was born at Islington East, Middlesex, England in 1873 and died at Nelson B.C. in 1933. There were two children. Mr. Astley arrived in Canada in 1879 and worked his way across Canada arriving at Banff and Lake Minnewanka in 1886. In association with W.H. Desborough built the first log hotel at Lake Minnewanka and operated it until 1889. At the request of William White he went to Lake Louise to develop the resort. He was there until 1895.

Mount Saint Piran is located in the Lake Louise area of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canad. ount St. Piran is two kilometer east of Mt Niblock and one kilometer northwest of Lake Agnes. It is situated in the Bow Range three kilometers east of the Continental Divide. The gentle slopes of Mount St. Piran can easily been seen from Lake Louise, or from afar along Highways 93 and 1. The peak was named in 1894 by Samuel Allen for Saint Piran, the parton saint of Cornwall, England. Willoughby John Astley, who hailed from Cornwall, was the first manager of Chateau Lake Louise.

On 26 January 1945, HMS Manners (A/Cdr. John Valentine Waterhouse, DSO, RN) was hit by one torpedo from U-1051 some 20 miles from Skerries, Isle of Man. The U-boat was sunk by the counter-attack of several escorts from the 4th and 5th Escort Group. The frigate broke in two after the hit, the stern sank with the loss of four officers and 39 ratings, while 15 others were injured. The forepart of the vessel was towed into Barrow in Furness and was declared a total loss.
